Established in 1947, Boland Cellars is surrounded by lush vineyards encompassing the cool slopes of Paardeberg (Horse Mountain) to the west and the granite soils of the Paarl Valley to the southeast. Some 96 owner/growers farm approximately 5,000 acres of vineyard from five distinct growing areas. Given the focus on the development of vineyards planted to noble red and white wine varietals the cellar has built a reputation for quality and is among South Africa’s top award winning wineries.
Boland Cellars has received 48 National & International Trophies, 21 Double Gold & 104 Gold medals during the last 8 years.
These awards include:
2001 International Wine & Spirits Competition London, U.K. "Winemaker of the Year" - Chief Cellar Master, Altus le Roux won the coveted Robert Mondavi Trophy.
2001 Dave Hughes Trophy - Best South African Producer
2001 International Wine & Spirits Competition London, U.K. – Best Shiraz and Best Cabernet Sauvignon
2003 International Wine & Spirits Competition London, U.K. – Best Shiraz
2007 Mondiales des Vins, Toronto, Canada - Best South African Producer
Following the change in political dispensation in South Africa, the cellar has fully embraced the pioneering spirit of the young democracy. Besides making technical innovations in vineyard and winery management practices, a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) initiative provides for workers to share the successes of the cellar.
From a technical perspective Boland Cellars has engaged practices that ensure that the word "quality" is not an empty entity used purely for marketing purposes, but one which all members of the company and its producing-shareholders understand and adhere to.
Furthermore, Boland Cellars is extremely fortunate in having five different areas from which to source grapes and changes in vine plantings have seen a move away from mass white varietals to a broadscale adoption of noble varieties suited to each of the growing areas. The prudent matching of terroir in the five areas around Paarl, to specific varietals is highlighted by the vast improvement in quality. The appointment of a resident viticulturist means channels between the producers and the cellars remain clear throughout the year, especially during the busy harvest period. Recent upgrades to cellar infrastructure and wine making practices have likewise shown their positive effects on a wine cellar that has clearly embraced the challenges of the 21st century!
