Overgaauw is a wine estate of distinction in the Stellenbosch region. It was founded by Abraham van Velden in 1905 on land owned by his family since 1783. For the past century the Van Veldens have done pioneering work and produced acclaimed wines on Overgaauw, one of the oldest family run estates in the area.
In more recent times, Braam Van Velden’s proved himself an accomplished winemaker, for instance being one of the first to pioneer the Bordeaux-style red blend in the shape of Tria Corda at the beginning of the 1980s, and today is still a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
The estate’s70 hectares of south facing vineyards are planted on deep weathered granite soils, cooled by sea breezes from False Bay, provide the ideal meso climate for the cultivation of noble grape varieties. Meticulous viticultural practices, including varietal site selection and low yields, ensure that only the very best grapes are used for Overgaauw wines. These are vinified in the renovated and expanded old cellar, fusing modern winemaking techniques with 100 years of experience. Very few things remain exceptional for four generations, but Overgaauw's wines have done just that.
While Van Velden Senior describes the first-label Overgaauw wines as “for special occasions”, the new entry-level Shepherd’s Cottage wines are intended to “make every occasion special” and consequently come across as more accessible. The motivation behind launching a second-label range was that he “wants people to open a bottle of Overgaauw every day”.
